My take on what makes a good writer, just my opinion

My take on what makes a good writer
I have read so many articles on what makes a good writer that my head is spinning. Trying to soak in all the information that is given, is like trying to add more water to already wet sponge.

So many feel that it is good grammar, or writing skills, that make a good writer. These are important, things to keep in mind and in use as you write. There is no denying that good grammar is a must, and writing skill is so important. However, I feel if you cannot tell a story, that will keep both you writing and the reading, and then you lost your purpose for writing. Is it not that we write for ourselves as well as for the readers to enjoy what has been put to pen and paper.

If writing is simply a past time, then I feel we have missed the real desire that leads one to write. I write because it draws in me into it, it calls me when I sleep and plays out storylines in my dreams. Awaking me, with its plots and drama filled pages full of mystery. I write because I love the art of writing, telling a story, and drawing my readers in. Making them choose and pick characters, whom they love and hate. As if they were close friends with them, they know the lives of the characters well. They could at times discuss what will happen next, as if they were writing the storyline, making themselves part of the grand scheme of things.

For me the story and the plot, the very reason the story was written are my reason to forge on in writing. Also my love of creating fun and functional characters, these in my mind are what make a good writer. At least and if only in my opinion.

If a story cannot hold us, and draw us in, then won`t we simply set the book down and move on to the next.

Key point “Keep those readers drawn into your storyline, and feed them what they crave. A great book and a great story.”

Much Love Author, Debbie May

Encouraging word for Authors

Somewhere between your writing a book and getting it sold, your mind is working overtime. Trying to figure out which way is the best way to get it out, so that people can see your work. I know for me my mind was always working to get things done, I never seem to get finished. I found new ideas and avenues that sparked my interest, and I was off and running again.  I`m not one who is afraid of new ideas, or one who will stop writing, because I feel defeated, discouraged, or even overwhelmed. I used those things as stepping stones, to begin to launch me into better more workable ideas.
If something doesn`t seem to be gaining me the response or profits I seek for my books, then I simply change my direction.  Let me say this, I have ran in many directions.  Some worked some didn`t, I won`t lie to you. I have talked to writers and authors that had gone through this, as well as myself.  So am writing this hoping we can all avoid this pitfall, and enjoy this journey.
Writing a book in the first place is a marvelous journey, but learning how to market them, and publish them can also be a journey.  One that brings us as much peace, as we found when writing the book.  So to find peace in the learning process, you have to take in only what you can process, and glean from what you have learned.
If you try to take in more than you can process.  You could become Frustrated, discourage, and overwhelmed, at all the posts on what to do and what not to do. Frustration can set in when you try to it all in a day. Allow yourself to relax and soak it in, and learn from those that offer their advice. There are skilled authors out there willing to teach you the tricks of the trade.
Knowledge is good, but I found myself reading all I  could, on books, publishing, marketing and profits.  I was a speed reader, reading as much as I could, as fast as I could. By the time I slowed down or stopped reading, I was exhausted, and over whelmed.  I had only confessed myself, and this made it harder to figure which way I should go. What and how I should proceed.
Helpful advice was grand but I needed to learn how to use wisely the knowledge I had taken in.  Knowing when something was not my avenue to promote my book. Taking the time to check each avenue out carefully.  Then applying the knowledge I had gained, kept from going in circles.
I’m not saying not try every avenue, because I did, but don`t let yourself get overwhelmed.  Sometimes we learn by trial and error. I`m learning to take it all in and enjoy the process of the entire journey, from start to finish, in peace.  From writing the book thought the learning process, to enjoying the profits of the sale, this is my journey.  I intend on enjoying it.
So I write and when I write, I write books. I love the process of creating characters, and plots of the mysteries.  Mystery books are my passion.  I do hope that you will do the same, continue writing, because it`s your passion.  Enjoy the entire journey from start to finish.  See your dream come to life, and spring up before your eyes.

Marketing ideas

When you are ready to market your product or products, you must first look at the target market. Once you know your target market, you will be ready to lay down your plan to announce to the world you have arrived.
You may want to post about your product online which is a great step, but go beyond that first step. Make yourself out a picture perfect document, detailing your product, and links to where they can purchase it. Give a list of ways they can get directly in touch with you, such as a P.O.Box .Allow them to get in touch with you at your bolg, or web site is another way for your buyers to reach you.
( Just a side note: Do not give out a lot of personal information, this step will also protect you. Only give information needed for them to acquire your product, or information concerning your product. My advise, keep your personal e-mail and home address out of your document. With that being said, lets continue on.)
Send your detailed document to areas and marketing places that deal with you type of products, as well as your friends. Ask your friends to help by, allow them to make copies of your documents and place them where they live, in various different areas.
Creating more attention for your product or book. That’s free advertisement for you, especially if they live in a different area than you currently do.  The more exposure and the more you expose your product, the better chance you will have of selling it. This can be done with family and friends as well.
Don`t limit yourself to what you alone can do Alone, ask for assistance from others.  Most family members and friends will be willing to help out.  Key: Don`t do it alone

More marketing, ideas

Selling your book is easy, getting people to buy into the idea can be the tricky part.  Using the right avenues is key. The right avenue is what is right for you, and your book. Not always what works form someone else will work for you.
You need to find you niche, and your target market and who your market will be.  Finding out these things can take a little practice. Knowing what does not work will help you to be more sure of what does.  If you have tried something and it seems to bring you no results, then maybe you need to rethink that avenue.

I have a few ideas that might jump start start you, to finding your niche,, and what will work for you.

If your interested in some marketing ideas, I have a few great ones. Click the labels of any posts you would like to read. This will pull up a variety of ideas for you to choose form. Check out my blog for information and Ideas to on how to gain more movement and create sells.

More marketing ideas

Here is an idea for marketing your book or books. I just thought of this, and I`am going to do this. Get with other authors and book sellers and have your own Book fair. Don`t wait for one to come to your area, make this book fair happen, when you want it. Get a list of authors and book dealers, and stores in your area.
Send out some sort of  brief document describing in detail what you are wanting to do in your area. Include the date and times of which you would like this event to take place, and don`t forget to pick a great place for this event.
Climate controlled areas are the best, after all costumers like to be comfortable while are shopping.  Make your invitation very interesting, both to the eye and there possible financial gain. Make it appealing as you lay out your goals and plans, so that they are not left with questions concerning your intent.
Attach a form, with an invitation to it, sort of of RSVP. Having a group of people selling the same objects, such as books, crafts, or food products, wheater it is baked goods or recipes. This will attract a lot of people to your event. key words, go out and make it happen.

Just another thought on marketing

Good Marketing, what a word and sometimes so baffling to achieve.  Good marketing can be done if you stick to it, don`t give up. If you look at your sales and there are down. Don`t give up. Let that news be your driving force.  Propel yourself into better marketing skills, more ideas and even different ideas. Check new and different idea`s by searching out areas you have not explored before. Take the time check those out and see if others have gained any results.
Venturing into unchartered territory can be scary, but it can pay off big time. (You can read some of my ideas in my other posts on marketing, if you needing some ideas.) Seemly simple ideas can be the best. Talking to co- worker about your book for example.  Sell your book before you get out in print and get them wanting to read it, from day one. Don`t be afraid to try new things and new ideas. When I wrote my book I was using everything I could to get my book in the face of buyers, friends and coworkers. Try newspaper ads in small communities they work great, but don`t stop there in your add.  Somewhere in your add, let them know where you will be for a booking signing, and then add every link to where they can purchase your book.
This will give many avenues to choose from. Buyers like to be comfortable, and where they feel comfortable. So give them choices.  If you sell instruction books, look up those sites where those kinds of books are sold.  This will help promote your type of book, and maybe offer you some needed exposure that goes for any kind of book, hook up where your type book is being sold.  Now let me say this, sometimes different is good.
Don`t be afraid to sell your book, and be the different book of the self. It could work out for you; your book would stand out among the crowd.  Key word here today is Don`t be afraid.

More marketing for your books

Marketing can be profitable, if you use your time, money and effort wisely. Spending money on marketing that will not give you back a full return is unwise. Let`s just say you, bought an add on the TV station. If your advertisements appears when most are sleeping, or our enjoying a bright sun filled day, who will really see you Advertisements?  You have now spent money that may not bring you the revenue you had hope for. Doing a TV add, during prime watching time is, better. You will have a greater audiences and potential for your target market.
Thus if you are going to venture into this area make sure you find out, the time your advertisements will run, and how many times a day it will run. TV advertisement is good if you get the right audience’s watching. Here`s a thought, if you spend the money for an advertisements, why not do an infomercial. There are many possibilities for that to done. So put your thinking cap on and jump in all the way.  Radio advertisements work the same way, yet they do have some differences.  Try talking to local radio stations, about being interviewed concerning your book. Find out what kind of audience’s they target, make sure it is ones that fit the same type you book you are advertising. For instances if you write Horror Books you wouldn`t want to advertise on a Christian station, or the other way around, Am just saying that you might miss your target audience.
I have a friend of mine who works for a radio station; I have set many interviews with him and found it works out very well.  During the interview times on the radio, he simply asks various questions concerning what I was being interviewed for. I answered his questions which gave me the opportunity, to share all the events that were coming into play. Radio interviews work much like a TV infomercials, but you’re at a radio station. I did the interviews in prime driving time, so I would target a large audience.  So marketing is knowing when, where and how, Timing is key.

Cheap Marketing Ideas

Marketing is fun but at times it can be a little tricky. Knowing when and where to market is the key. Here is what I found out, hope this helps.

Try setting yourself up in reading groups in your local coffee houses, student unions and such. Ask if you can use your book as one of the books to be read. .If they agree read your book, leaving out a few back chapters. This wills them to wanting more.

Try linking yourself into local events that deal with books or authors, such as book fairs. You may be able to find out when one is coming to your area by checking community events section of the paper, or web site.

This may seem strange to male authors so I will direct it to the female authors for the time being. When the ladies have their weekly card game night, or craft night, or they seem to gathering into one place for a good chat. Take along your book a few books maybe, show it off share with them about your book.  Get their couristy up and asking questions. If they already have your book, you may ask if they know anyone that might be interested in your book. If so leave them a business card with your web address or link name so that you will be easily found. Word of mouth plays a big part in selling a book, so count that short.

Have your friends create a buzz about your book, both online and off.

Business and clubs sometime have auctions, donate your book; it only takes one vocal reader to start chatting about your book to create others wanting to read it.

Independent local book stores might be interested in buying a few copies at a time to sell, work with them to help sell your book and they may be asking for more the next time. Ask if could set up a book signing there, have a large picture of your book displayed, so that it catches the eye of those browsing for books.

Local stores that sell gas and small food items often have a place to put books or cards, check on placing your book there. Beware you need to make sure you will be paid if the book is stolen form their store..
Try setting up a booking signing in your local grocery store, some smaller city`s seem to just be great friends with their customers, and would agree for you take a small area in there store for a day.
A larger city might be more challenging but if you shop there often and they know you, they might sign on for the idea.
Carry a copy of your book everywhere you go, you never know when an opportunity will arise to share your book with someone.
I will be post more ideas in the coming days.

Just a few thoughts about Books onDemand

In my search of the world of self-publishing, I found that are many avenues to create a book. There are Books on Demand for instance, where they print your book and you sell it. 100% of all the profit goes to you. You must be willing to put out the effort to sell your book yourself, market it, and create avenues for others to see and buy your book. This can and is a good idea for the right person. If you have ambition, drive and are motived, you could do well at this. You may have to sort all this out on a learning curve but once learned, you will have gained a lot of knowledge that will be useful in long run.  Set down some goals, of where and when you want to start selling your book.  How you want to market it, such as stores, online, retailers, and the list goes on and on. Marketing a book can be a challenge but, the rewards can be great.  Let me make this statement (I believe that it really doesn`t matter who publishes your books, as long as the reader is enjoying it. Most readers are not so much interested in the publisher, as much as they are in the content.)  So books stores want big names this is true, but I believe with the opening of Books on Demand and self-publishing on the rise, sooner or later they too will be changing their minds about it.

I will posting some links for you to use if you are interested in Books on Demand or self-publishing. Check out the links to see if this avenue is right for you. I will also post a link to Editors and Preditors so that you can look their sites over as to which companies are good ones and which you should avoid.
Just look at the names ( tabs)  right below the name of this site. Click on the name that best fits your need, this will open that page for youe viewing. I hope some of this was helpful, don`t be afraid to publish your book.
